The Mar Menor retains a Spanish way of life now missing from some other areas. The village of Playa Honda is a small community on the SE Mediterranean coast of Spain in the Province of Murcia. It has a supermarket, bakery, pharmacy and restaurants all within walking distance. A pleasant stroll along the beach brings you to Camping La Manga which has its own beach bar and excellent, reasonably priced restaurant. There are many other bars and restaurants only a short drive away. A bus service runs from Cartagena to La Manga stopping at various places along the way including Playa Honda. The Mar Menor is also famous for the black mud. People flock to this area because the black mud is said to help some skin conditions and releive pain from rheumatism, arthritis and many other ailments.
The Mar Menor has an average of 3000 hours of sunshine per year and is one of the hottest areas in Spain. In summer the average temperature is 21C and rarely falls below 10C providing an ideal place to escape the miserable British winter.
La Manga is approximately 1 km from Playa Honda. A narrow strip of land 22km long. To the west it encloses the Mar Menor and to the east separates it from the Mediterranean sea. It offers 44 km of blue flag beaches and an abundance of shops, bars and restaurants some of which remain open all year.
Cabos de Palos lying between La Manga and Playa Honda it is a quaint fishing village providing many traditional restaurants along the harbour and on Sunday mornings there is a local market. Cabos de Palos also has a number of supermarkets and a Chinese restaurant.
Cartagena is a twenty minute drive away and is the areas second largest city with all the shops you might expect to find and many places of historical interest including traces of old fortifications that defended the port over it's 3000 years of history.
Further afield is the city of Murcia approximately 45mins drive away with places of interest for all tastes. Torrevieja, Alicante and Benidorm are about 1 hour or so away. Just outside Benidorm you can find the theme park of Terra Mitica. Aqualand and Mundomar provide good family entertainment.
There is something for everyone in La Manga with every type of bar and restaurant for all ages to choose from. During the summer, there is the Hippy Market at the Plaza Bohemia in the area known as "the heart of La Manga. The Hotel Hyatt has a casino and there are also three open air cinemas.
Playa Honda is situated only a short distance from the famous La Manga Golf course and there are many others in the area.
